Problems With Out of Stock Prescription Items
Medication shortages continue to be a widespread problem, both locally and nationally but there are steps you can take to try and maintain your usual supply of medicines:
- If your usual pharmacy cannot obtain your medication, ask them to 'return the prescription to the NHS Spine'. This will make it available to other pharmacies so you can try elsewhere.
- The 'Find a Pharmacy' link below is a comprehensive list of local pharmacies to contact and locate stock or you can use the NHS App link below to nominate the pharmacy.
- Bath Pharmacy Company are not on the NHS link but can also be contacted on 0117 986 0832. They are registered as an internet based pharmacy.
- It is important to note that different pharmacies use different suppliers, so it is well worth shopping around – in the vast majority of cases, the medication is available at one or other of the pharmacies in and around Bath.
- If you are unable to get to a pharmacy which has the stock, explore delivery options with them (a charge may apply) or ask a relative or friend to collect on your behalf.
- If a new prescription is needed for a different pharmacy (e.g. the pharmacy was able to supply other items on the prescription and so need to retain it for their records), you can fill in an admin triage request to the relevant practice (links below) to let us know where to send a new prescription. Remember to include the medication and the name of the new pharmacy in your request.
If you have tried the above and are still having difficulty:
- Ask if the pharmacy have the medications available in a different pack size or under a different brand name or in a different strength which could be used to make up your usual dose. You can then pass this information to us via the triage system by submitting an admin request (link below) or ask the pharmacy to contact your practice with the information
- If you have tried multiple pharmacies and cannot locate any stock, please contact the surgery for advice on suitable alternatives.
How to order a repeat prescription
The easiest way to order a prescription online is via the NHS App (link below).
You can download the NHS App to your computer device or smart phone.
You will need to choose a pharmacy to prepare your prescription and collect your medication from. On the NHS App you can nominate the pharmacy you would like to use.
Please note you need to be at least 17 years old to access the NHS App.
A parent/guardian who is also a registered patient at the practice may be able request to access repeat medication requests for their child on the NHS App. Please contact your practice to ask if this would be possible.
If you are unable to access the NHS App, there is also an alternative on-line system called SystmOnline. This was established before the creation of the NHS App and provides online access without needing to use an App.
To use SystmOnline you will also need:
- An online account (please contact the practice if you do not have a SystmOnline account)
- The name of the medication and dosage
- To be at least 17-years old.
